Those odors from parts in the oven really attract the ladies!

They'll come in and say "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SMELL!?"

You are exactly right, Ted. I can tell you have had extensive experience and are well acquainted with the peculiar olfactory capabilities of the fairer sex. In my case, my wife was gone for several days, and as a result, I had an extended "window" of opportunity to complete my mission. I would have been caught for sure if I had had just a single day to work with. Even I, as a male, with necessarily limited abilities, thought the smell of my freshly painted manifold being cooked was surprisingly strong and lingered for longer than i would have thought possible.

Yesterday I got my starter with the original drive re-installed in my truck. The grinding I was experiencing on the first start-up attempt is gone! My replacement drive apparently didn't spin quite fast enough to work in my 6 volt system. Another possibility is that the replacement drive was a little too short to engage properly. Installing the starter, like so many things for me, turned into a major project.

My original starter drive was in the "engaged" position when I got it back from my friend. My friend said, "Oh you'll just have to fiddle with it a little to get it past the fly wheel teeth". He was partially right. I did "fiddle", but it was a lot more than a little. In frustration, I ended up taking it to a shop to have the drive "spun up". I was too embarrassed to take it back to my friend and tell him I couldn't do it. Even with the drive "spun up", it was still difficult.

I've only done about a half dozen start-ups, but I think my problem is solved--at least until my 65 year old drive decides to call it quits.

Some engines, it doesn't matter if the Bendix starter drive is in the engaged position. Just go ahead and install it.
