A Simple Diagnostic Process
I haven’t done much work since retiring 14 months ago. But, a friend referred a 7.3 to me. When I say I haven't done much work, that would be Diesel Work, now I never get a day off and their seems to never be enough time in the day to do everything. I need to go back to work for a Break!
I do try to stop by here every couple weeks and offer whatever insight, if any, I can.
The owner said it had been in both the dealership and an aftermarket shop for black smoke and poor power above 2500 RPM. "Big Loss in Power"
I ALWAYS start with a simple system I developed eons ago, begin at the simplest processes and move forward.
ie: LAST repairs or maintenance performed, how often it is driven and does it tow? (ask customer), Oil, Air Filter, Battery’s, Fuel Filter, Fuel Pressure, Scantool, advanced diagnostics and road test.
This guy spends $120 for a Dealer to Scan his Truck, and an additional $95 for an aftermarket Shop to look at his truck (don’t know what they did – he waited on it both times and said it was about an hour each).
Shows up in my drive way at about 8:15 am Friday. Leaves at 8:30. Cost him nothing.
ME: “So, have you done anything? How often do you drive it?
HIM: "Last maintenance was 500 miles and drive it only about every-every-another month to keep everything working. I use it to tow a Fifth Wheel twice a year.”
ME: "Do you do the maintenance just as the Owners Manual Recommends - This is a yes or no question, you either do or your don't?"
HIM: "Yes"
ME: Okay lets go check some things like oil, filters, and Batteries...
Here is what I found. Removed the Birds Nest and blew hi new AIS Filter out with an air gun to get all the feathers and crap out.
Repaired in five minutes or less.
