1975 f100, 302 with a c-4. My daughter uses it as a daily driver.
Today she said she had no reverse. Drove it home fine. Shifter works fine and moves through all the gears. no loose bolts in the linkage. I have tried to manually shift into reverse, but nothing happens. not one bit of noise.
Trans fluid is where it should be, but does smell a bit burnt. She has never complained that the tranny was slipping. I have read about the low reverse band may be the problem. Would the modulator have anything to do with it? Not that I have touched it, but is it worth changing?
Might try adjusting the bands first.
Pull the vacuum line from the modulator, if fluid runs out the line the mod. definately needs replacing.
Should swap ok. Where is the N/S switch located? On the column or trans?
Thanks for the help.
No fluid in the hose to the modulator.
NSS is on the column.
I will read up on how to adjust the reverse bands tonight or tomorrow
Usually replacement of the lock nut is recommended because it is also a seal. Just to try and see if it fixes the problem, I wouldn't worry about replacing it.
I tried to adjust it according to the link and the ford repair manual. The adjustment shaft just kept going in and never hit the 10 ft pounds. The shaft was very easy to thread in. I concluded that something happened inside, so I have started taking the transmission out and am bringing it to a shop for repair. I will let you know what they find

I'd say getting the transmission in and out of the truck is harder than replacing/rebuilding it. Get the video, a spring pack compressor and a clean work area...
papabear- You have me thinking.
Can I really do this myself? The video I am looking for, is it a reverse band replacement? If not what would I look up? I may try this.
There are a couple recent threads by guys that have rebuilt their transmissions. I think LaserMike did his. There's a video on eBay that's a step by step full rebuild. Parts are readily available.
If you can't find the links, I'll post them up in a bit.
Guys, Don't call me a sissy, but this transmission rebuild is out of my league.
I took it to a rebuilder. He told me the low band was completely broken. Third was about to go. Going to see the parts today. Hopefully ready in a day or so.
