getting my A/C working and wondering if the floor vent is supposed to have air coming out of it at all settings except defrost?
seems like when on 'vent' or 'AC' that should be coming out of vents only, then the floor vent comes on with HI/LO and (i have a down arrow next to HI/LO that i assume is floor) .
then defrost is only from the dash.
so is it normal for my floor vent to be on with the first 4 settings?

Among many other things, here's what the 1976 Ford truck owner's manual says about the air flow for the integral heater - A/C controls (pages 19 & 20).
In the VENT position vented air is directed to the instrument panel registers and the floor ducts.
In the A/C position cooled air is directed through the instrument panel registers.
In the HI-LO position air is directed through the floor ducts and instrument panel registers.
In the HEAT position air is directed through the floor ducts.
In the "triangle" position air flow will be split between the defroster ducts and floor ducts.
In the DEFROST position air flow will be through the defroster ducts.

When you slide the lever on the panel, this valve opens one blend door, closes another. The rubber hose for the vacuum controlled heater water valve also connects to this valve.
All the vacuum hoses connect to this valve that also includes the "kicker switch" to turn on the A/C
The vacuum hoses may be cracked where they slide onto the nipples of this valve.
Plus there are vacuum controlled blend door motors, check to see if these hoses have cracked. One of the blend door motors may have failed.
Just did this last night myself - I rerouted the vacuum line which goes to the dash and vacuum canister directly to manifold vac on the vacuum tree - with the increased vacuum on the control line the dash controls suddenly started working correctly. Besides the potential leaks above, you could possibly have a vacuum leak on something else in that vacuum circuit - if you isolate the dash controls to one circuit that can help you narrow down where to look. On mine, the AC was blowing out of one defrost vent only (on the driver's side, was really making the wife unhappy) and I could move the control, switch the air on and off, but the vents acted jammed in position. Once the controls got full vacuum they worked perfectly.
