I've been looking online for something to carry luggage and other items that need secure and waterproof transport. I don't want anything permanent and I don't want a toolbox as it would be a serious PIA when hooking up a gooseneck because I am pretty sure it would block the camera. The wife and I are going to Cape Cod in July and will be picking up another couple along the way. That relegates the luggage to outside status (at least for the first leg, depending on how we get along with the other folks, LOL). If anyone has bought something like this and it works for you then please let me know. Also needs to be able to lock it in the bed by some means, like a cable lock or something. The wife has an SUV that would solve this dilemma but, in my book, when you have a beastly machine like an SD then it is always the go-to vehicle for road trips. She hates flying so she wants to "drive", by which she means "ride" while I drive. LOL. (It's actually way better like that anyway) Thanks in advance for the info.
I have the same requirements as you have stated. After researching for months, I have decided to go with the G4 Elite Fold-a-Cover from Steffens. The ability to open either the locking front panel or locking rear panel is a nice feature. Being a quad fold, this leaves ample room for a 5th wheel or goose neck hitch as well when fully opened. As to being secure from water, reviews indicate the a few drops MAY enter at a corner, although others say the bed says dry. This cover needs no drain tubes inside the bed since it mounts and seals on top of the bed rails. Either way, I'll make sure to use totes for those items I want to ensure stay dry just in case. Other folding and retractable covers all seem to have instances of some water seepage. I suspect that you would have to go to a solid fiberglass cover to get water tight.
Retractable covers are nice (I considered the RetraxPRO MX for a while), but are much more pricey, heavier and take up bed space at the front.
I went with an Agri-Cover LOWMAX. Same design as mentioned above with no drainage rails or tubes as it mounts over the rails. Only difference is it is much slimmer which makes it look like its not there. As far as security goes, it can only be opened when the tailgate is opened.
