Steering Wheel

I have an original leather steering wheel and the patent leather is starting to go bad as if the leather is no longer protected. Is there anything I can do to return the steering wheel back to the patent leather look it had from the factory before the leather goes bad?

You might call a reputable upholstery place. They should know.

Likely not. You'll have to do what I did and reupholster it yourself if you don't wanna pay someone to do it.

These are very nice. I bought one for another vehicle and was very pleased with it. I got a two tone. You do sew them on yourself and it is easy with their directions. They provide the thread and sewing needle.

Leather in cars is painted. You can buy paint specifically for it. It's not cheap. I think I paid $16 or so at the PPG store for the can I have now. I will get three steering wheels out of one can. If you have a car paint store, stop in. If I see the brand name I will post it. SEM is the brand name of the paint.

I am going to paint my leather wheel in my pickup but haven't gotten around to it.

As in all paint work, prep is everything. I don't sand leather, you have to make the call.

Most car dealers have a guy who comes around to repair leather seats on used cars that they want to sell. He paints the leather as Hardscrabble indicates. Perhaps you can stop by the Ford dealer and ask the used car guys who they use.

I used the Wheelskins on mine. I also used JB Weld plastic putty to fill the notches on the spokes. It turned out great.
