Hi, I am new and have had my baby (2002 excursion diesel) forever. We just got a new camper. It seems that when put in reverse we keep blowing the #38. Any ideas would be amazing. Thank you. Chel
Am presuming this is while connecting to the 7 pin plug and not the 4 pin plug . . .
If the #38 fuse is the same as the pickup ('Trailer tow park lamps and backup lamps'), will need to do the basics of troubleshooting whether it is the Ex's connection, the trailer's plug, or wiring in the trailer.
If possible, a quick check to isolate the Ex is to hook up to another known good trailer with backup lights. Having a test harness / plug is also useful.
If the Ex is good and the new-to-you trailer was bought through a dealer, consider taking it back for them to troubleshoot the trailer and make it right.
If the new-to-you trailer was bought from an individual, then naturally all of the troubleshooting is on you. From this point, consider focusing on its plug and on the rear brake / backup light fixtures (especially the backup bulbs and base).
If the trailer does not have backup lights, my vote is to just focus on the plug as the starting point.
Another possible focus area is if the trailer has surge brakes. In that case the switch that disables the brakes when backing uses the backup light wire. So that is another possible area to look. (Again, if the trailer has surge brakes.)
