Oil Cooler change
I will try to post pictures as I Go along.
my truck is a 2008 F350 SRW, have already change EGR Coolers, all belts and hoses, thermostat. Runs good except when towing I get the wrench for the temperature delta.
Removal from the shop book:
NOTE: It is recommended that this component be serviced with the vehicle body removed. If the body can be removed, refer to Oil Cooler — Body Off in this section.
NOTE: Inspect the cooling system for OIL or FUEL contamination. If no cross contamination of OIL or FUEL is found proceed to the next step.
If OIL or FUEL is present in the cooling system, refer to the appropriate Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that pertain to 6.4L diesel engine cooling system concerns and follow the procedure outlined.
Visually inspect all cooling system hoses/connections and component contact point(s) to the engine for evidence of coolant loss such as white coolant residue (dried coolant) or liquid coolant and repair as necessary.
NOTE: Carryout this step before removal of any engine components to replace the oil cooler. If the cooling system was flushed per the above note, proceed to the next step.
Clean and flush the diesel cooling system to make sure that all rust and sediment is removed from the system. Refer to Cooling System Flushing - Diesel Engines In Section 303-03 .
Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold — Body On in this section.
Remove the turbocharger pedestal. For additional information, refer to Section 303-04D.
NOTE: Do not discard the oil cooler cover screws. They are self-tapping screws and will be needed to cut the threads in the new oil cooler cover.
Remove the 10 screws and the oil filter base.
Remove and discard the press-in-place gaskets.
Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
NOTICE: In the event of catastrophic engine failure, always install a new oil cooler assembly (with oil cooler). Foreign material cannot be removed from the oil cooler and engine damage may occur.
NOTE: The oil cooler is replaced as an assembly.
Remove the 8 bolts and the oil cooler assembly.
Remove and discard the press-in-place gaskets.
Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
Installation
NOTICE: In the event of catastrophic engine failure, always install a new oil cooler assembly (with oil cooler). Foreign material cannot be removed from the oil cooler and engine damage may occur.
Using new press-in-place gaskets, install the oil cooler cover assembly and 8 bolts.
Tighten to 31 Nm (23 lb-ft).
NOTE: Do not discard the oil cooler cover screws. They are self-tapping screws and will be needed to cut the threads in the new oil cooler cover.
Install new press-in-place gaskets, the oil filter base and 10 screws.
On new oil cooler cover, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
On used oil cooler cover, tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
Install the turbocharger pedestal. For additional information, refer to Section 303-04D.
Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to Intake Manifold — Body On in this section.
Fill the engine cooling system and inspect for leaks. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03.
If coolant leaks are found or the engine has a pressure or vacuum concern, refer to Engine (Diagnosis and Testing, Component Test), Section 303-03.
