Hey guys, I haven't done his before, but figured the worst I'll get is "no way" or "F yourself" LOL. I am doing a clutch job in my truck in about a week (when the kit gets here). I really need an extra set of hands or two, mainly for taking the trans down. I hear these ZFs are HEAVY.
So, for all the beer and food (and fuel if you are pretty far), who might be willing to hang for a day? I'll remove everything I possibly can and this isn't a ploy to get someone to do it for me. It's more for the safety and extra set of eyes so I don't completely screw something up.
Anyone? Oh, I am in Rapid City, SD for the time being. Thanks fellas. I hope I get to meet a new face.
I guess I should clarify on the fuel thing. If you are a couple hundred miles, no problem. If you are REALLY far, I might as well take it to a garage and have them do it. I was quoted $800 to have someone else do it. I have a few issues with that though.
1) I HATE anyone else working on my truck
2) I simply cannot afford that right now
3) I thought it might be a chance to meet a few other forum members and be proud to this myself. I have done everything else, so I might as well do this job.
Anyways, apologies if I mislead on the fuel thing. Oh, what's a Utag?
Not trying to stop a FTE get together, but with the $139 Horrible freight low lift trans jack the job really isn't all that hard. I did it a few years back by myself and if you put the front end up on jack stands it will give you enough clearance to get the trans out and leave it on the jack. The jack was the only way it was possible for me.

Thanks Bill. That's what I was needing to hear maybe. I do have a good friend from this forum stopping by on his way up north next Tuesday. That's going to be a huge help. I have jack-stands as well so I'll make sure to put those to good use.

When you pay someone else you really need to double the price because it's hard to get someone else to do it competently and right.
You would get to meet a couple of us, party, chat and share our wit and wisdom.
You would add a priceless experience to your memories.
I knew the cost would be prohibitive but the idea sounded good.
And is there a button for that utag, or am I supposed to remember the coding on it?
Byron, I feel for you. As you probably already know I had my clutch replaced by SkySkiJason recently because I not only did not have the ability, but I did not have the tools to complete the job.
We were very lucky that Jason was only 2 hours from us and could do the job with his eyes closed and hands tied behind his back.
I wish you the best of luck though. Take your time, do rush and triple check things before you act on them when dealing with a large (heavy) job like this.

I would love the get together. If I could afford fuel for someone coming from far away, i would do it in a second.

Free bump to the top for you as well.
Thanks Sous! The support is much appreciated. I have a good friend and help coming Tuesday. If anyone else wants to join in, my door is open and my beer is yours.

Dangit, I even double checked the spelling of your name and still misspelled it... I changed my original comment to reflect the proper spelling.
Anyway, take pictures as you know how much we love to see other people working their trucks. I can tell you this, having a new and properly functioning clutch in the truck makes a world of difference. Good luck to you and your friend!
Yeah, Byron I can't wait to get moving up there and help you.
It's gonna be fun. I have only pulled auto transmissions but it shouldn't be too much harder. I mean I am just there for the muscle and someone to fetch the cold ones, plus you're doing all the research we are going to need, so we got this.
I'll make sure and pack some lonestars in the cooler for ya, too haha!
Do you have a shop lined up to resurface your flywheel or are you putting in new? Most clutch manufacturers recommend using locktite on the flywheel bolts. While you have the trans out it would be a perfect time to put a 1/2" copper drain tube from the hole in the back of the valley to the hole in the bottom of the block on the passenger side. Use a 90* fitting at the top. I RTV'ed mine into the upper hole.

I am really looking forward to it! Gonna be a good time. Those Lonestars will be welcome. Can't wait to to have ya! We'll knock this out no problem.

Good luck!
Thanks Bill! The kit has a new flywheel and I am also doing the input shaft repair with a new pilot bearing and sleeve. I definitely planned on the Loctite. What is this copper drain you speak of? I am curious. I'm a big believer in doing it right the first time in doing stuff while it's easier to get to.
I wish I had taken some pictures of mine when I did it but I didn't. There is a hole in the back of the valley which drains any fluids which has leaked into the valley. On an auto truck this is no big deal but for trucks with clutches the oil/fuel or any other liquid can find its way to the clutch disc and contaminate it causing it to start slipping. The tube just provides an enclosed route for the liquids to drain from the valley to the hole in the bottom of the block just outside the oil pan on the passenger side.
Jason did this mod for Sous when he installed his new clutch so you should be able to find a pic on Sous's thread about clutch chatter.
