I have a 98 Expedition EB. When I go from high beams to low beams I lose lights all together. I notice when I move it slightly forward the lights come back on. I believe this is caused by the multifunction switch. Has anyone changed it?
Not on an explorer but, on a windstar its not that hard. Just have to pull the column covers and there are a couple of screws holding it on. Hardest part is trying to unplug the wires with the limited space.
The switch is not too bad to pull, hust a little tricky. Pull the lower dash cover off, and look underneath the switch. You will see a small opening. Insert a small pick or similar and slide the release over. The switch is held in by a spring-loaded tab, and can only be released this way.
The MFS controls the rear washer and wiper also.Fords MFS's are their way of garranteeing future profits for their parts division. I had my 98 Expy's replaced right before the warranty expired, and when I bought my 91 Grand Marquis and 96 Cougar I had the dealer replace them before I'd buy the cars as they were intermittantly bad . My 03 Expy's got 28 months left on warranty so we'll see how long this one lasts.
I had to replace the MFS on my '97 twice: at 25K miles and 50K miles. Since then it's worked perfectly with no problems. Now at 112K miles. Ford had a bad supplier I guess.
Thanks. I contacted my local ford dealer since I found a Technical Service bulletin for the MFS on alldata.com. This is being campaigned. He said if it goes through they will reimburse the cost of fixing it. I won't hold my breath though.
