Engine Hoist Too Short

We're replacing a 460 engine with a 502. Today, we bolted the engine load leveler onto the engine, expecting to lift the 460 out of the engine compartment. Problem is, the brand new 2-ton engine hoist i bought at Auto Zone is too short to reach the load leveler from the front, even with the boom set at the 1/2 ton (longest) position. I suppose I can do one of three things: 1) attempt to lift the engine out from the side, or 2) rent a bigger (longer) engine hoist, or 3) hire a company to remove the engine using a crane truck, a $160/hour house call, with a four hour minimum. Needless to say, if I go with option 3 and then transfer parts from the 460 to the new engine (a one-day job, at least), I'll have to call them back here to install the new engine ($1280 in total).

Has anyone ever lifted an engine out from the side?

What kind of truck is it? Usually it's the height that's the problem.

What is in the way.. is there a big winch bumper on the truck or something? If so take it off.. that has got to be a better solution than spending all that money.

Serving suggestion IF height is your issue: Remove front wheels, lower it as far as you can without resting it on the brakes.

If you can't lower the truck enough you can either try to rent, borrow, build or buy an A Frame gantry hoist. Another option is to rent a forklift for a day from an equipment rental place if you can't find a large enough engine hoist.

Remove wheels, If its 4wd, remove shocks and use HD ratchet straps to compress the axle to the bump stops, put truck on ground, blocks of wood under frame to keep rotors of the ground. Those 2 things should drop the truck a good foot or more.

I'd take the front clip off before paying 160/hr. If you take it off in one piece it's not that bad.
