ok so I have a 89 7.3 idi I was having an issue with it starting it would take forever to start I live in Texas so it's usually 70 deg when I wake up so when I go to start my truck turn the key wts light comes on there is no clicking not even when the light goes out it stays on for bout 8 to 10 seconds then when I go to crank it up i have to sit there and hold it until it starts up so I changed the glowplug controller/relay and now when I when I turn the key wts comes on and I can hear the clicking and when the light goes out it keeps clicking for another few seconds I just need assurance that it's supposed to do that it still took a while to start but not as long as it used to so I'll probably change the glowplugs next since money is tight cause there probably old idk when the last owner changed them but please help need to know if it's working right now
Sounds like your GP is working like it should, 10 seconds is about the average if its not cold. Does it start then die? White smoke when it starts or rough idle?

No it does not start then die when it starts it stays on then cloud of white smoke for about few seconds as soon as it starts and it has a little rough idle but it's not bad
clicking is after burn, or the relay turning the glow plugs on/off to help the engine stay running and is normal. it sounds like you may have 1 or 2 bad glow plugs.
motorcraft ZD-9 glow plugs only. you can get them from rock auto for around $9.50 each.
bad glow plugs. under 30 degrees block temp you should see a 15 second+ WTS light. at 70 degrees block temp, it should be between around 10 seconds.
over 120 degrees block temp, the glow plugs will turn off.
my guess is you have 2 bad glow plugs.
