Anyone ever been to Sunset State Beach? Friends of mine want to go to the beach for the 4th, and they don't care which beach as long as it is close. Sunset looks to be the closest one, but I have never been there. I have not been to a beach since I lived in Anaheim, and then it was either Newport Beach or Huntington Beach. A little too far to drive from here. LOL. According to Google maps, it is a 2 and a half hour drive from here. They say there are picnic areas, and campgrounds, but I would imagine they are all booked for the holiday. Another option might be Marina Beach, but it looks to be a farther drive.

Haven't been in years, but when we would go to the beach, Sunset is where we went most often. I guess any info I could give would be way out of date. Except to say, better get there at dawn if you expect to find a parking place. It was a nice wide beach, south facing, lots of fire rings.
On edit: apparently no fires these days.

That is the only thing I am worried about is getting a good place to park/setup. I seriously doubt we will leave early enough to get there by dawn. I doubt we will even leave at dawn. This family takes a long time to get ready especially with 6 kids, and two of them in diapers. Although, the parents and oldest son did get up early enough to go hiking in Yosemite, so maybe it will be possible.

Jim, where are you coming from? It is a lot more than 3 hours from Fresno to any beach around Los Angeles. And Sunset Beach is south of LA. In fact, you mentioned Huntington, and Sunset is directly next to Huntington, so same diff as far as the drive.
Seems from Fresno you should be going southwest. Something like Pismo, Morro, Carmel, Cambria.
Even Ventura beaches would keep you out of the worst LA crowds.
Maybe I'm not catching you on where you are starting from???
Seal Beach was always one of my favs too. Small town charm. And the pier was good for fishing. Which was mostly why I was ever down there. Used to fish all night, and trying to get into whatever trouble we could find.

2-3 miles south of (PCH) Pt Mugu has some free beaches, most of them near me cost 12$ a day or more. Oxnard/Ventura has some free ones also and a boardwalk to enjoy (and help out the beggars). Carpinteria is great too.

For those who are veterans, you can get on the Pt Mugu naval base, which has a campground. I was fortunate enough to get to camp with the scouts there once. Our scoutmaster at the time was a navy reservist. Really nice beach. I'm not sure of the rules and details, but vets should check it out.

Must be two different Sunset Beaches then, because the one I am referring to is about 20 minutes north or Monterrey, and close to Santa Cruz. It is about even or a little south of Fresno which is where we would be coming from. But of course the roads don't make a beeline to any beach. So we will travel north a bit, then west, and then south. Assuming they still want to go. I sent them a text with the particulars, and have not heard a reply.

Technical Education Czech style
A Czech nuclear power station is in hot water after it used a bikini contest to hire potential interns.
CEZ's nuclear station in the southern village of Temelín posted images of high school graduates wearing bathing suits and hard hats on its Facebook page last week. The station encouraged Facebook users to vote for the girl they liked best, with the winner earning a two-week internship at the station.
It didn't take long for the post to backfire, with some Facebook users calling it sexist and questioning whether the station preferred attractive females to those who might have other qualifications.
The station later deleted the post and apologized, noting that it offered internships to all 10 bikini contest participants.
"We didn't want to offend anyone," the station said in a translated Facebook post. "The purpose of the competition was to promote technical education. But if the original vision raised doubts or concerns, we are very sorry."

Visited the Reagan library yesterday with Aidric. The US Presidency used to mean so much in the world (apologies for the gloom).
