Mine was pretty dusty but I don't think that caused it to go out.

The trailer wiring is all connected to the truck wiring.. Also the trailers have a battery to control the trailer breaks if it becomes disconnected..
Could be a power surge caused when the trailer goes over a bump and the ground made by the ball is broken for a second..

When my truck lights failed I was hooked to a trailer but that trailer didn't have a battery or brakes.

Ground goes back to the towing vehicle via the 7 way plug.

Yeah i know, But the trailer lights don't work without a good connection to the ball..
My trailer ball is all rusted and it takes a little while for the rust to work off and make a good connection

You have a bad ground either in the 7 way plug or the trailer harness where it grounds to the truck.
