Gotta replace the power steering pump in my truck. Wondering if anyone had suggestions for brand to get, or would a rebuild (with lifetime warranty) from the auto store suffice? Should I get the pump with reservoir or just the pump?
Also what do I use for fluid? ATF or regular old power steering fluid? I've heard both ways. Truck is a 1974 F250 4x4 390 4-speed manual. Thanks in advance.

I replaced my Ford pump with a reman from NAPA. Works fine and no drama. I don't remember if it had the reservoir or not... I think not. No biggie either way. You will need to borrow (loan a tool) or buy (eg. HF) the press tool to remove and re-install the pulley.
PS fluid seems to be a hotly debated topic. I used generic clear PS fluid and ran a couple of quarts through to flush out most of the old ATF with the return hose in a bucket. Fluid in the system was still a little pink. It has run that way fine for ~7 years. I believe type F ATF is fine also. Dex/Merc ATF is OK maybe. I would suggest either type F or PS fluid for the fluid.
Just replaced pump on my 74 f100 360 auto 2wd. Picked up a rebuilt unit at Autozone. Has metal reservoir as original. Used type f auto fluid as recommended. Just one less fluid to keep in truck. Remember to install reservoir cap while bleeding the system. Works for me.
I replaced the pump in my 79 with one from NAPA. It must have been a reservoir pump, because they broke the reservoir when they changed over the pulley.
I bought a gallon of the NAPA power steering fluid. It's kind of a blue color. It seems to work fine, but it's kind of whine-y. When it cools off, or maybe sooner, I'll replace the fluid with Type F
I actually looked up the spec in the manual, and there are two long numbers. The second number matches the number for power steering fluid-not Type F. The other number matches the govt spec for hydraulic fluid.
I think you can use either, and the debate is endless. If I did it over, I'd use Type F
Replaced my pump about 6 months ago (1974 F-100 2wd) with one from Advance Auto or Auto Zone - can't remember exactly which. So far so good for me. I'd probably go NAPA if I was doing it again (I was gifted the pump I used) - just trust their stuff better.
Not to beat a dead horse, but make sure you get a puller to remove the pulley. You can rent them, and it will get the pulley off in minutes. If you bend the pulley you will be regretting it because they are really hard to find.
