new power steering pump installed but wrong fluid inserted

I put the reman. Pump in today and started to fill it up. Didn't pay attention to the quarts that were ATF and put the dexron III mercon in. Does anybody know if this will be an issue? I thought every thing I had was type F but I was wrong. Pump seems fine but want to see if it will cause damage.

Probably not, but that;s just a guess. Why not just use regular power steering fluid to start with? What do you save, maybe $5 by using ATF? Actual power steering fluid is more refined and designed for more heat, or so I've read.

Hmmm. I was always directed to use type F for all ford power steering pumps. I didn't know you could use a regular power steering fluid in them.

You didn't mention what type power steering pump (Thompson, C-2, Saginaw) you have but, if it's a Ford pump before the 2000's it's probably designed for type F transmission fluid.

Using the wrong fluid is likely asking for eventual problems.

ATF type F is a 20W base oil with anti-foaming additives but no friction modifiers like Dexron III/Mercon transmission fluid or PS fluid.

PS fluids are a 5W weight synthetic oil and this can cause seals to leak that were designed for type F fluid.

Being it's a newer rebuilt pump most likely be okay.

I have a couple of bottles of Power Steering Fluid that I bought a couple of years ago sitting on a shelf in my garage. The fluid in those bottles appears to be kind of thick but, it is clear just like water. It's been a long time since I've bought P/S Fluid but, I don't remember it being like this stuff.

I'm thinking it would be best to use Type F.

PS fluid is a lighter weight oil. My 98 Taurus requires Mercon V and I once accidentally put in PS fluid. Ran that by my mechanic and he says, "don't sweat it, it's just a lighter weight oil and won't hurt anything."

I will for him John since I'm right here. I too have worked back (shop) counter for years in my past. Back in the days of the Dent and older, mechanics and owners put Type-F in both the P/S and the Trannys. So Did Ford. In 1977 Ford changed the fluid in the C6 (only) to Dexron but continued putting Type-F in the P/S. Later on when ford came out with automatic overdrives (8o's)the fluid changed so Ford changed the P/S fluid also. Stopped using Type-F in everything from that moment to present date.
So IMHO the OP should remove that fluid he put in,put in Type-F,and re-bleed the system.

Type F ATF is recommended by Ford to also be used in older power steering systems. While the type F ATF is used in the older power steering systems, type F ATF isn't the same thing as power steering fluid.

Type F ATF is designed for older transmissions and is used in older power steering systems designed to use Type F fluid and is dyed red. Power steering fluid is only designed for power steering systems, is a lighter weight oil than type F and isn't compatible for use in transmissions. It's also clear, not red.

ATF, brake fluid and PS fluid are all hydraulic oils but, they do not share the same properties, base oils or additives. Each has its own Saybolt Universal Second for flow of viscosity.

Type F ATF doesn't contain friction modifiers. Mercon/Dexron ATF does contain friction modifiers.Type F is less 'slippery' than Dexron/Mercon ATF.

If your Ford PS pump was designed before 1996/'98, it was likely designed for type F ATF (however, always consult your owners manual for the specified fluids and fill capacities). If whatever is being poured in the power steering pump/system doesn't have specification ESW-M2C33-F on the bottle label, it's not designed for the older power steering systems.

I don't want to turn into dualling banjos here Ultra, but the "clear" P/s fluid you reference is for modern Ford vehicles. Not Dents and older. You are talking about Motorcraft part number XL-14. Used to have a part number something like F7AZ3F823B off the top o' my head. Don't have time to research. Gotta punch out and go home. Got Christmas stuff a happnin'.

And like the clear power steering fluid, Dexron/Mercon is also designed for various later model vehicles for use in both transmissions and (specifically designed) power steering systems and as such, if it doesn't say ESW-M2C33-F on the label, it isn't designed to be used in an older power steering system that calls for this specification --which is Type-F.

...if not Dueling Banjos, how 'bout a little Foggy Mountain Breakdown instead?
