COP boot arcing?

To the experts here...is this white powdery residue on the COP boot due to arcing to ground?

Background: '02 EX 6.8L V10 started missing/running rough at low rpm while travelling at 55-65 mph in OD. While moving some trailers around the property this week, it kicked out P0720 and P0301 showing misfire on cylinders 1 and 6 (up front). Plus intermittent flashing OD OFF light.

Just passed 100K mileage, so it looks like it's time to use Sammie's how-to.

Not an expert, but I'd think that's probably what it is.

I'm with jayjordan on this. As an electrician, that looks all too familiar....

Yep all new boots and plugs at this point. Be ready for a couple coils soon as those are usually done by 100k.

Thanks, all! Does a coil failure usually kick out a misfire code? Or do they die quietly?

A few coils have corrosion on the connector where the spring stick in. Cleans out OK though.

I would just do plugs and boots/springs and if the misfire persists, then change the affected coil. No need to replace them until they die. Just avoid the cheapo eBay coils and stick with the suggested one from the tech folder. I believe it is a denso found on rock auto. Not a bad idea to carry one in the glovebox if you travel a lot. Your pics are a classic example of boots that can't contain the lightning.

Thanks to all. Earned my "6.8L V10 Number 5 Spark Plug" merit badge yesterday. The new GearWrench KDT41740 plug sockets along with some wobble extensions from Harbor Freight sure made a hard job much easier.

Looks like I might have a little water intrusion on Number 9 and 10 on the drivers side under the cowl. Need to read up on that leak fix.

A new COP boot usually fixes those leaks.

I do remember reading on here about how to stop the water from pouring in there in the first place from the cowl area, but haven't had that issue yet. As stated though, good boots should keep it mostly out of there anyway.

That happens if the rubber weatherstrip piece that runs along the cowl edge of the hood is missing.
