I'm trying to get my gas gauge working. I thought it was the sending unit so I got a new one and it didn't work. I grounded the orange wire and it went up to 3/4 full if I manually put the float on full it will go up to 1/4. I checked the ground. Any suggestions?
One thing that can goof up the gauges is a bad body grounds. Made sure the engine to body ground wire is connected.
This is at the rear of the engine intake manifold bolt.
The sending unit also needs a body jumper wire to body ground.
Did you ohm out the sending unit before installing it? It should read 10 ohms with the float/arm up (to simulate a full tank) and 73 ohms with the float/arm down (simulating an empty tank). Half a tank will read about 44 ohms.
Yea, run a ground wire from the sender to the body, make sure the engine is grounded via the bolt for that at the rear of the motor, to the firewall, if all of that is correct and your sender is the right one and correct then your dash gauge could be bad but this is really rare. Anything is possible, it's basic electricity but it has to be in the ballpark.

Good idea, Dennis is the best for this stuff and much more with Ford. When it comes hook it up (ground also) and see what your gauge does with float travel HI and LO. If you're still not working right you best get another gauge.
Best of luck .... Keep truckin' .....
