Charging issues

Ok so here is the back story, 2000 5.4l f250. Driving last battery light comes on and lights dim at idle so I take the alternator to autozone and have it tested and it's bad so I threw a new one in it and it's all good. Drove about 100 miles no issue, try to start it today and it's dead so we jump it and the volts are way up at 18 so I go to shut it off but the go back to normal maybe just a little above what I am used to but could be the new alternator. I'm just curious why the volts would be so high after jumping it? Is that normal or did I maybe get a junk alternator.

thanks

Bad regulator, no it's not normal, yes you likely got a junk alternator.
