Hi all,
2000 7.3 PSD Excursion with 4R-100 transmission stalls engine after oil and filter change. Both reverse and forward makes the tranny to act up.
It feels like the clutches does not free up and it somewhat act like the lock up are engaged. It does go away when oil heats up - its just when cold.
Is it wrong oil spec , oilfilter not seated correctly ?
It all startet after I had the oil and filter replaced.
It is hard to imagine that the oil and filter change is not directly connected to the transmission malfunctioning. Transmission oils are made to different specifications for good reasons. And certainly if the wrong filter was installed or installed incorrectly, that can make the tranny act weird.
Thank you for getting back to me. It seems like I've used Mobil1 Synt ATF at that particular job. I'm thinking the oil spec are wrong or I did mess up with the filter - in terms of not have it seated correctly or used a wrong one.
Thing is - we are using the same oil and filter on 3 other Excursions with same transmissions - and they does not have any problems at all.
Also - I did check the filter I replaced with the old one and they where the same.
I'll order different brand of oil and Motorchraft filter, drop the pan and take it from there.
I have used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for several years now without issue. It is actually my fluid of choice on all my 4r100 builds. It sounds like a filter seal issue. I've seen it happen on one of our Dodge company trucks. One of the other techs didn't have the filter neck seated all the way and worked loose. I simply had to reseat it deeper.
Hi all,
After talking to one of the better trans shop here in Norway - I decided to use two bottles of trans juice/additive as last attempt before dropping the pan.
It worked fine - last 6 months without any more stalling.
I have also investegated into the service manual of this 4R-1oo and it seems that the owner have used a local shop which have used oil with wrong spec according to oem.
We are worried that this have caused damage to the clutches - but for now we have decided to leave it as is..
I did also find an service bulletin from Ford which said that some 4R-100 had stalling problems trough 00 - 02. They didn't have any sollution there and then - it was an old bulletin.
Anywhay - seems like this have been noticed before by Ford.
Good to hear an oil additive solved the problem. Ain't broke, don't fix it.
When I first got my truck and did not know better I pretty much abused it with high temps while towing. Oil was brown and smelled bad and had glitter like a bass boat. Changed fluid and filter (plus a valve body and 6.0 cooler) and its been fine for the last 40k.
