Hey guys im new to the board and need to know a few things. I want a 2000 Excursion, and I am going to put a 6" lift on it. I was wondering several things. What engine should I look to get the diesel or the gas, and if its gas which one. I'd like to get one that has some decent gas mileage but hey its an excursion so I know it wont be great. Also what kind of lift would you all suggest getting. I appreciate the help. Thanks.
Hi Scott...I have a 2000 Excursion. Don't even think of the 8 cylinder. It's not even sold here in Canada. The 10 gas is the only motor for a truck of this weight. I have the V10 and despite good power on paper, climbing out of a rocky hole in 4H requires a heavy boot with lots of torque converter slip. I can't imagine any less engine in an Excursion. If you are concerned about mileage...and mean this very politely...don't buy a truck... Gas or Diesel. The Excursion is a 3/4 ton Super Duty pickup with an enclosed and carpeted box and a rear seat salvaged out of a mid 80s Aerostar (deplorable for the price of these things). If you're buying it to haul groceries, kids or an inflated ego, it's a horrible waste of resources. If you need a solid truck with space, towing and people capacity...go for it.
I spent 70% of my kilometres off pavement on some of the most remote roads in British Columbia. From cross ditches to creeks to washouts, skid plates and a winch beat lifts every time. A 6 " lift is just 6" more mud you'll have to be pulled out of. I have a 3" lift on the front as there is simply not enough stock suspension travel for off pavement comfort. The added weight of a winch up front doesn't help. 2" levels the truck from the factory nose down attitude. An extra inch gives it the best ride possible. Anything higher is hey-look-at-me-boy-mud-racer wanna be stuff. So I guess it depends on what you will be using the truck for...good luck.
I can see going to the diesel for a 6" lift and a set of 35's.
I have a v10 with a 2" leveling lift up front and a set of 295/75/16's which are basically 33's and it still has plenty of pulling power and I actually get better than I thought for fuel economy. I just checked my last tank, and I got 11mpg with a mix of driving on the highway (75-80mph) and city. If I drive to my cabin on smaller highways and keep it at 60mph I get 2 more mpg. I have added a MAC intake which I saw an improvement in power and 1-1.5 mpg on the highway. With the stock tires I was getting another 2 mpg better yet. I do really like my Excursion. I am on the road alot and travel in the winter every weekend to go snowmobiling. I added a TV/DVD with head phones for the kid, and I don't hear a thing until we get where we are going.
