You must not be looking at all if you cant find a 302 crate engine.
I can find a 302 but to find one that's a speed density truck motor I'm not having to much luck either in the description it says it a ho motor or is not compatible with fuel injection
Never do this. I am currently going through an auto parts store "crate" 351 engine. It had two different heads (DO8E , E6TE) and a camshaft that was not fuel injection friendly. Did it run and move the vehicle? Yes, but not well, and only till the 15.000 mile warranty was up and it dropped a valve seat.
Parts house remans are pushed through with the least amount of new parts on them. That's how they make money on them.
Tore apart a Chevy 350 from Advance auto when the owner said he couldn't keep it cool. He used a wide variety of tstats bought a new radiator, but since it wasn't losing coolant they wouldn't replace it.
IT WAS .080 OVER. That's insane. I wouldn't bore an engine more than .040, let alone double that. And the heads were 416s from a 305. No wonder it ran hot thin wall dumping heat into the cooling system and like 10.5:1 compression. He decided to rebuild the one he originally took out it cleaned up at 30 over. Had guides put in the heads, and I looked at the cam that came from the "crate engine" it was an actual gm piece. Ran the numbers and it was for a 79 Monte Carlo with a 265.... Wtf. They literally just took junk they had made sure it was serviceable enough to make the engine run and slapped it all together.
What is baffling is he ordered a 350 for a 1972 Caprice. And they used parts for a 305 and 265...
That's with easy access Chevy parts... Imagine specific year ford parts... Good luck.
Crate engine has become one of those overused terms.
Are you looking for a new engine as in brand new castings, never fired, or a rebuilt engine? Either one could be delivered in a crate. Also consider whether you are reusing you accessories which would indicate what you really want is a short/long block assembly. Difference would be no heads vs. heads included. If what you want is a model specific turnkey engine from oilpan to intake, check with reputable rebuilders. Even Ford will source replacement engines locally.
There is very little that would qualify one 5.0 over another in terms of compatibility with EFI. The most significant would be to stay away from the pre 1980 rotating assembly that had 28 oz balance, but even that could be used if you are willing to source the correct balancer and flex plate or flywheel. There also may be some issues with dipstick location.
