My '76 302 recently became toast. I'm trying to figure whether I want to install a rebuilt 302 or try and find a low mileage used motor. I've heard terrible horror stories about rebuilts. Seems like 2 out of 5 stories are about how the motor went to crap due to poor craftsmanship. I don't like those odds. I need some advice on my best options and maybe a reference to a reputable rebuilder or salvage yard. Appreciate it......
MR. Boggs,
if the other gentleman is'nt interested in the 302, i'm in need of one to go into one of my other projects, not a truck. I'm located in northwest Ga. and can come to atlanta anytime that is convenient for you. you can contact me via e-mail at Don.Walker1@worldnet.att.net if you wish.
Thanks
Howdy,
Here's my experience with a reman. engine from Pep Boys, remanufacturer was Recon engines. Paid $950 up front (302 V-8), got back $250 when I turned the core back in. Engine has 1 yr, unlim. mileage warranty. I've had it in my truck for 10 months, and been driving about 50 miles a day work commute. So far, I have no complaints. The motor was very tight when I first got it, and compression was right on the money. No valve rattle. I did as the reman company recommended and checked the valve lash after the first 500 miles, and no problem there either. Engine was bored out .40, and it does get up and go when I need it to. So, that's my experience with one. Like you, I've heard bad and good about reman. engines. Hope this helps. Joseph
