no mountains. just hills maybe 900ft max. It seemed to do fine didn't feel like it was struggling. pulled mostly in overdrive at around 2000 rpm and would occasionally shift into 3rd if I got into it.
Have you towed over mountains? My 7.3 seems to struggle pulling an 8,000lb trailer even with mods in my signature. My expectation for the 7.3 may be too high and have no baseline for determining if I have an issue.
Hmmm, you have single shot sticks and I'm still running the split shots, but I have no problems muscling my 10k 31' TT up and over The Grapevine in SoCal, or the range at the Oregon Cali border.
Stewart - Do you have stock (3.73) gears? I think going to 4.10 will help me. Other than that I am at a loss. Do you climb in or out of OD?
Stock gears, stock tires. Transmission does not hunt under most conditions, but I do have a TC lockout switch that seems to only get used when pulling into Yosemite (curvy up and down, lower MPH).
Stewart - I am thinking of swapping the gears to the 4.10s. Are some brands better than others (i.e. Spicer, Yukon, Richmond, etc.)? I will change to the Eaton True Trac at the same time in the rear. Thx.

I agree with Stewart. While it's no barnburner the 7.3L should get the job done. You have an envious list of mods in your signature that should wake your truck up.
I'm not sure what your definition of "struggling" is (my truck is no match for my dad's '16 Ram that can pull 16K up a 6% grade at 65mph at 900F EGT).
The 4.10s will definitely help the symptom but IMHO I don't think that solves your problem. Even with 3.73s you should be able to pull 8K.
One thing not listed in your signature is what tuning you are using for your single shots. Have you contacted them to see if they can help with your issue?
I have a TS 6 position chip. I was wondering about that. While pulling a hill and EGTs approach 1,200 it blows a lot of smoke. So you're thinking maybe have the chip adjusted?
I would think it's worth a shot. With your signature you should be doing much better than what you are if everything is working well mechanically...even with 3.73s. Personally, I would be talking with my tuner and looking for problems under the hood. Just my .02
