I use to change oil in everything at three thousand miles no matter what. So I finally committed to change my ways and make a minimum of five thousand miles from now on. I went five thousand miles and changing it this morning it was definitely dark. I noticed the dark hue of it coming out of the drain and the oil filter while unscrewing it. I'm not saying this means anything except that it will be dark at five thousand miles. From past experience the oil still looks new at three thousand miles so somewhere between three and five thousand miles I guess it turns.
Going forward I still will be sticking with five thousand mile oil change intervals.
I changed my oil at 1000 miles as part of the break in.
My truck finally reached 7940 miles yesterday with 12% showing on the life. Since I was going on a long camping trip Labor day and didn't have much time to change it prior to that I changed my oil yesterday. I was curious how the oil would look after previously reading your posts. While draining it didn't look to bad. I wonder how it would have looked if I would ran the 12% out which might have been an additional 1000 miles. So at 7000 miles I was showing 12% left.
The Honda Ridgeline I still have with 208,000 on it, I changed pretty religiously at 7500 and ALWAYS used Mobile One Full Synthetic and filter.
When I change the oil in my motorcycle, also using Mobil oil, after a 5000 oil change the oil looks like a carmel apple color. My truck this time wasn't a carmel apple color but was close. It definitely wasn't black in any way.
Now if I change the oil in my Ridgeline, it's close to black every time as after 25+ oil changes I can accept that.
It's a 2015. I was using the red jug synthetic blend. The oil was still translucent not like opaque flat black or anything. Old habits die hard...I wasted a lot of good oil draining at three thousand.
But I'm not going past five...
Should oil not start turning dark after so many miles? My grandfather always told me if it's dark it means it's working. The oil has detergent in it, just to clean those deposits out. Now I'm far from being an oil expert of any sorts, and he was no mechanic. That may have been info from 50 years ago, with older engines, but it makes sense. Regardless, I make it easy on myself and change at 5k intervals, making tracking easy. 10k, 15k, 20k.......

This is just a reminder that the Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM) in the diesel-equipped Super Duty is significantly different from the Oil Life Minder (OLM) system in the 6.2-equipped F-150 and Super Duty. Here are Ford's descriptions of the two systems:
IOLM – Intelligent Oil Life Monitor has an algorithm that determines when to change the oil and is based on vehicle operating conditions. The system will display a message in the instrument cluster message center when an oil change is required.
OMS – Oil Minder System displays a message in the instrument cluster message center when to change the oil. The interval is determined by time or mileage. There is NO algorithm to compensate for operating conditions.
My take of the OMS used in the 6.2-equipped trucks is that it just keeps track of the "normal" oil change interval requirement of 7,500 miles or six months, whichever comes first. In other words, the OMS is an odometer/timer. Unlike the IOMS, it doesn't adjust for operating conditions such as towing, idling, cold starts, etc.
Our truck was built in early March and now has 3742 miles on the odometer. The OLM reads 54%, pretty much right on track for the 7.5K OCI; it'll be interesting to see that the OLM reports in September when the truck is six months old. I did change the engine oil and filter at 1K miles, but I didn't reset the OLM.
I really enjoy the new truck, but I certainly don't get to drive it as much as I'd like. However, we're looking forward to the ~4500 mile trip we have coming up in October.
I'll change the truck's engine oil and filter just before we leave, and then again just after we return.
Can't help but wonder if the change in viscosity to 5w-30 was in response to accelerated wear showing up with 5w-20.

right after I purchased my 2012 in 2015 at 136,000 miles
I went to 10w30... because of miles and possible wear.
motorcraft filter and Mobil One full synthetic .. my opinion.
engine does not loose oil between the 6,000 mile oil changes.
also in the 2 years.. not once have i heard the startup tick... currently at 152,000 miles
