Help! Rough idle and surging.

New user here so a quick rundown on my truck first. It's a 2006 F350 6.0L. 310,000 miles. EGR cooler and valve deleted, full 4" exhaust, "straight piped". SCT iTSX tuner. HPOP was just checked recently and PTC fitting replaced. FICM was also checked.

Now on to my problem, sometimes has a very rough idle and will surge while driving. This happens especially after a hard acceleration. Looking at gauges on my tuner all at idle, my MAP shows between 100-103 kpa, Barometric Pressure at 28.88, turbo boost between.08-.44. Battery voltage astounds 13.5, engine load around 30. FICM @ 50v. I have no idea if all these are anywhere close to correct range, any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brandon

Welcome You're probably going to get bombarded with information, so don't get overloaded and just take things one step at a time.

Surging is commonly related to the ICP sensor taking a dump. A cheap test is to unplug it and see if that helps the issue. ICP is located in the picture attached below.

You using the tuner as a scanner? To rule out the tuner, return the truck to the stock tune, the post ICP_V and IPR% at hot idle. Should be in the ballpark of 580psi/22%.

You can ask a moderator to move this thread to the engine-specific forum for some more detailed help:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum107/

The ICP sensor is where the red arrow is pointing:

Thank you for the suggestion, yup, I recognize that sensor. That's the one I pulled and put a air house fitting in to pressurized the hpop system and check for leaks, Correct?

That's one place to do it, if you have a controller or wire a pigtail to close the IPR valve during the pressure test.

That silver box is the glow plug control module..anyways it controls the plugs.. if you truck sounds like this (copy and paste)...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nTa1gONnxQg

then you might have the same issue I had.. it won't throw a code..take yours off unplug the plugs and see if you can see any melted plastic in there.. if there's even just a little bit it can cause heavy surging.. I bought a new one for $125 or so and fixed it. So just take it off and check around the plugs ins maybe just clean them and reinstall see if that works if not you'll probably need a new relay

Thanks Strokin,
It kinda does a little of that (in the video) when accelerating. Add far as the glow plug controller, I replaced that a couple months ago.

Texastech_Diesel,
I'll return truck to stock tomorrow morning and check those values and post the results. I went ahead and ordered an ICP sensor that should be here Tuesday. And I'm suspecting my alternator is starting to take a crap too. Sometimes get a battery light and only 11.8-12.5v at idle. It will slowly increase as speed rpm's but never advice 13.5

if you replaced that controller module module and think it's the icp, with the motor running unplug the wires from the icp and if it makes any difference in the idle than it's probably good. If it doesn't change idle behavior it's probably bad although mine threw a code... I have a banks six gun and the icp harness is a little screwy. My rpm's would jump while idling. I wiggled them around a little and that seems to have fixed it..also until lug your tuner and plug in the stock harness drive around see if that works... keep us updated

Ok guys, I've returned to stock on the SCT. At hot idle, I'll give you a list of options and values: barometric pressure IN HG = 28.38, battery voltage = 13.38 & bouncing, coolant temp = 178, engine load = 23.52, oil temp = 189.55, exhaust backpressure = 113.5, FICM ignition = 13.50v, FICM logic power = 13.50v, FICM main internal injector V = 50.00v, ICP duty cycle = 0.15, injector control pressure = 4.81-4.88mPa, injector pulse width = 0.78-0.98, manifold absolute pressure = 98.5-100.00kPa, RPM = 684-695, turbo boost = -0.21-0.08, VGT duty cycle = 0.57.
That's about all the options I have other than vehicle spotted, air flow min, command gear, pedal position, time running, trans temp, and vehicle speed.

Also, on a side note, the truck was not idling rough at the time I took those readings. Sometimes it acts up, other times it doesn't.

Is this after the new ICP sensor? These two aren't in range, it should be 20-23% for the IPR DC%, and 3.99-4.27mpA for ICP.

Can you change the ICP reading to PSI on the tuner? I'm backing into those mPa values using google to convert from PSI, it should idle at 580psi, or maybe 620psi depending on the PCM program.

If you don't have the new sensor yet, get the truck hot, turn it off and remove the ICP sensor connector, then restart and post the IPR% and ICP values again please. I have no idea if the iTSX is showing you actual or desired ICP, is there a complete PID list in the app you can check and see if ICP has actual, desired, or voltage behind it?

Those readings are with the existing ICP sensor. The new one should be here today. If this rain we are getting here stops, I'll try to get out there and check the unplugging sensor and let you know the results.
