C6 flexplate questions

so I know it's not a bronco but I'm building a 81 f150 long travel sand truck, it had a 300 six cylinder and 4 speed and I swapped in a 351w, actually a 393 stroker with a c6 and np208 t case, well I used the flexplate the came with my engine witch was a 84. I put it all together and the the starter sounded horrible and would eventually just stop and grind and slip and not turn the motor over, so I took it back and exchanged it for a other new starter, well that one worked but sounded bad, and then it after 6 or 7 startups also would grind and slip and no longer spin the motor over, so I pulled the flex plate thinking it was bad...well it really doesn't look bad at all, obvious sharp burst from the starter but all the teeth are there and look like they can be cleaned up with a file, I really don't want to have to change the flex plate because it's balanced for my new motor, am I missing something? Do ford use starter shims? My flex plate is a 164 btw, and I am new to fords so

you might need to go to a older parts house and look at a couple different starters to find the right one. sounds like the nose is too short limiting engagement.
