7.3 vs 6.0 engine noise?

I've been checking over some powerstroke trade ins at work. I mostly see 6.0s and they're loud alright. The shop has the contract on the local 6.0 ambulances too. But today I checked out a 03 F-250 with a 7.3. and it was so quiet compared to a 6.0! I always thought the 7.3 was louder? I kind of wonder if theres any ryhme or reason about the engine noise On the heui injection.

I believe you are talking about the engine noise.

My 6oh clatters louder than my buddies 2003 6oh. I think its injectors, along with oil type.

Of course it gets quieter after its warmed up.

I just switched from using 5w-40 to 15w-40 oil, not it's even louder when the engine is cold.

I've never owned either, but have done 4-5hr road trips in the back seat of both. The 7.3 drove me nuts, while the 6.0 wasn't nearly as bad.

But could a quieter 7.3 indicate any issues?

as the diesel engines progressed, they got quieter. you can hear my 88 idling from 3 blocks away. the 02 you can only hear from 2 blocks away. the 6.0 you can only hear one block away. the 6.7 you can barely hear it standing next to it.

loud 7.3 could have been starving for fuel

mine was loud before new fuel pump and the noise is tolerable now

We have a 7.3 and it always quiets out at highway speeds. Sounds louder at idle since I swapped in a muffler delete pipe until I decide what to do with a replacement exhaust. Biggest difference I've noticed between the 7.3 and 6.0 is the natural sound. You can usually tell which motor is which when one is driving by with your back turned to it. Not louder or softer just different. The 6.0 seems to have a higher pitch or ping than the 7.3 which sounds deeper. Just my opinion.

Cool. I love 7.3s but I drove 6.0s more often at work. It just thought the 7.3 was a little louder. As long as its not a cause of concern. This one Kinda reminds me of a cold common rail. But just a little more louder. Did they play with pilot injection at all on the 7.3? Could a tuner make one louder? I assume that changes in the injector timing will change the diesel knock characteristics.

More timing will make the engine louder, plus the 6.0 runs higher injection pressure. The 6.0 also has a variable geometry turbo, which builds higher boost at lower rpms.
