Regulated return benefits

What are the benefits of a regulated return line?

Also I was reading that the international motors and OSB had them but the newer years did not, if this is true how do I know. I just bought a 2000 f350. New to the whole diesel world.

I'm not familiar with the system for the 7.3L. I had a '06 6.0L and installed the ITP reg return system. It was a pita to install, well, one of the lines took me hours to get positioned just right to fit up between things to get where it needed to go. In the end, I didn't notice much if any difference. But supposedly it helps your injector longevity by ensuring proper fuel pressure even to the last injector in the rail.

That's the supposition.

I've read posts that amount to PhD thesis papers on different diesel boards over the years where guys talk about fluid dynamics, pressure waves in the fuel, temperatures, turbulence in fuel flow, yada yada yada, justifying everything from $5 banjo bolts to $400 FASS fuel pumps to $800 regulated return systems.

With stock injectors, at stock power levels, with stock tuning, IMO it doesn't matter at all on a 7.3 or 6.0. Pre-Powerstroke IDI 6.9 and 7.3 injection pumps were a different deal.

There are real benefits to a RR system when increasing power levels, but it's just part of upgrading the fuel system, which has to be done in unison with upgrading the oil and forced induction systems. You only need increased fuel volume if you have bigger oil volume to inject it, and then only if you have the air to burn it. All three systems have different limits, but by the time a regulated return is needed to run bigger injectors you're already a lift pump and maybe an HPOP deep.

There might be some benefits to deleting the fuel bowl on a 7.3, IIRC you can get a no-start if the heater shorts and blows a fuse that impacts the PCM.
