77 F150 clicks?

Got a 77 f150 4x4 4 speed with a 351 in it. Spent most the day cruising around the hills started up an ran fine all day. Started making my way home. Stopped at the Chevron to buy a couple cans of chew went to start an it just clicked. Crossed the terminals on the solenoid an just clicked tapped the starter an nothing. Ended up pull starting with a buddys truck. Put a new solenoid but still clicks. The cable from the solenoid to the starter has seen better days though. Tried jumping it thinking it was the battery nothing. Any suggestions

Yeah, I'd say the starter is screwed....

They can just lock up too. You can use jumper cables and go straight from the battery positive terminal, to the terminal on the starter. Could just be cables not letting your battery do its job.

Are you sure it's not the battery? I like to try them in a different vehicle, in one of these cases.

I mean take the battery out of the 77, and try it in the '78.

A bad starter, the headlights would also choke, it will hog all the juice when the key is turned, basically a dead short. Often banging on them will get you home or to a parts store.

Try some new heavy duty 1/0 battery and solenoid cables, for Mother's Day. I'm sure she'll be more than pleased!

A poor connection at battery post or stud can cause that problem. Suggest clean and inspect all connections. If the cable is rough that could be it also.

Cleaning (and trying battery swap) are "free" as well.

Could also be a dead battery. If they're a little dead, the solenoid might click. If they're real dead, you can't even jump them

Agree with Blue and White on checking/cleaning the battery posts and terminals. Just a little bit of corrosion around the inside of the terminals would give the symptoms you're describing.

Wouldn't hurt to ohm out the (+) and (-) wires either. They have been known to develop corrosion away from the terminal ends - sometimes as much as 6-7 inches away - leaving a head scratcher.....unless you check for impedance.

You could take the starter out and bench test it, too.....eliminate/find a problem.

Battery cables can't really be ohm'd out, they carry heavy current, hundreds of amps, so consequently even a few tenths of an ohm resistance will hork both starting and charging. That's why it's suggested to simply replace them if they are old.

I will clean what i can today before work. It needs a new cable from the starter anyways been rubbing against the manifold. If the starter is bad which one one would i buy one for the truck year or the year of car the motor was taken from. The motor is out of a 77 Ford LTD.
