Angry "Key" issues....

So I'll ask the advice of anyone willing to share an opinion.... and try to keep it short.

By day, I'm a high school teacher in a rough urban setting, and yesterday a student stole my coat, with the keys to my prized 2016 F250 Lariat CCSB in the pocket...

I went immediately to the dealer, and the key was un-paired from the truck, so the dealer assures me that, while the physical key can still provide access to the cab, they would be unable to start the ignition or take the truck.

Perhaps I'm overly paranoid, but the idea of a student being able to get into the cab, and everything in there, at some random unknown future date, I'm pondering getting locks replaced... Info from the dealership is that I'm looking at about $500-600 in parts, plus a few hundred dollars' of labor, and I think that is just ignition, driver's door, and tailgate (not the center console or the 2 under-seat bins)...

So thoughts... Should I just forget my paranoia, buy a new key, and move on? Are there other options that I might be missing? Thanks for your time and $0.02!

I would get it re-keyed. Order the parts and do it yourself. The ignition maybe more difficult but the doors there are several videos going over the doors.

What about this option, replace the front door handles with the lock cylinder with a set of rear door handles so no exterior locks. While you are at it invest in JimmyJammers. This takes about 30 minutes from start to finish after watching a couple of online videos. This solves the issue of them getting in and helps secure your truck too.

Personally I would not attempt the ignition rekey and would let dealership do just that one thing.

I would definitely get the doors and tailgate re-keyed and/or do the keyhole delete with rear door handles. And if you are doing that, you will want the ignition key to match. Even though the stolen key will no longer start the truck, it will still unlock the shifter to put it into neutral making it easier to steal.

Hang the new key from a chain around your neck at all times or keep it in your pocket, because the student just became the teacher. Just hope that the lesson doesn't get any more expensive than new keys.

I am sorry for your problem and admire someone who is trying to help such kids.

It won't solve your current problem, but I suggest a small safe or locker you can bolt to something solid. Even a briefcase (with cable) which I use for travel works great. It would be very bad indeed to have all the locks replaced only to have the new keys stolen.

I worry about the same thing only no one I know has ever had anything stolen at work. To minimize my risk I leave the keys out of sight in the truck at work, and use the keypad for entry.

You didn't say how handy you are with tools. Is it possible to go to a junkyard and get a new set of door locks yourself? Taking them out of the wreck should be good practice for tackling your own truck.
