Instrument Cluster Back Plate

I removed the instrument cluster from my 1977 F-250 on Labor Day and the problem I suspected was confirmed. The back plate disintegrated on removal. I was fortunate enough to have been the high bidder for an entire cluster from a 1978 on EBAY.

Two questions: the speedometer in the 1977 was a 100 mph and the 1978 has an 85 mph speedometer. Will this speedometer function correctly as is in the 1977? Also, assuming the back plate on the cluster is in decent shape, is there anything I can do to avoid brittleness setting in? I'm assuming it's probably in pretty good shape as it's coming from Illinois and has not been exposed to the kind of heat in it's life that mine had as my truck has spent its entire life in Texas.

On a side note, I was so concerned over the instrument cluster predicament that as I backed out of the garage, I forgot that my wife's Subaru was parked in the driveway, and I managed to place a nice crease in the driver's side fender with the bumper of the truck. Needless to say, the instrument cluster problem didn't seem so bad after that.

Just swap the speedo. Then you will have your 100mph and the correct odometer reading... Either one will work fine.

There are two different styles of cluster backs.
One for gauges (18 Pin)
One for idiot lights.(14 pin)

Which one did buy and how much was/is it to get it to you?

Dennis,

Mine had all gauges and I happened to find one with all gauges. The total price including shipping was $39.51. I think it's a pretty good deal, but we'll see when it gets to me. The seller indicated the printed circuit board was in good shape. What was more important to me was that the back plate was in good shape as the circuit board is still available.

The speedo should work fine,, Ive been told to make sure that the printed circuit boards be the same color and the plug in to have the same number of pins.

All speedometers in the US are calibrated for 1000 revolutions per mile. Just pull your 100mph unit and put it in the 78 cluster. Some models had a different location for the high beam indicator so you will have to match your flex circuit with that also.
