my 57 Ford Truck originally came with the "three on the tree" and a smaller tranny. It was probably the light duty truck and it has the lessor 272 Y block.
When I bought it, it had the "four on the floor" and probably a T98 transmission. Anyways, they had pulled the speedometer cable from the old transmission and it was hanging there.
I bought the new one (LMC) and it will work on this transmission. However, they had left the aperture on the tranny open and it's full of junk. I'm cleaning it out blindly (it's directed upward) and I can feel around the gear that's still in there. So, I can clean it out a bit and probably pull the gear, but I don't want to do too much without foreknowledge. Do I need to drop the tranny and get visibility? Can I dig with a small screwdriver and use some degreaser and irrigation to clean it out without dropping it?
a few years ago I had to replace a speedometer drive gear on a T98A. If you remove the drive shaft and remove the yoke, you can remove the bolts that hold the housing the driven gear mounts in and remove it. Then it will be easy to clean out the crud. I would also drain the lube from the transmission to check for contaminated lube.h
