Just reaching out to see if any of the Ford expedition owners (mine is a 2016) have found and use an android (heck IOS as well) navigation app with the their non-navigation version of sync 3.2.2
I have tried a few approaches with no success. Android Autoplay has no listed navigation apps as compatible. Sygic claims to have a nav app that works with sync 3.2.2 but so far I have not had any success using it.
I just got notified that Sync 2.2 is available for my 2016. The truck is running as we speak with the USB drive loaded with the files inserted in the top slot. Says Performing System Update in the top of the screen. We'll see how it goes. I did the download from the Ford Owners site.

It is a pretty lengthy update. I know a lot of the high-tech users were awaiting the 2.2 upgrade, it provided me little value. Probably better at supporting communications stuff like texts and calls.
It finished and I did go thru all the menus to enable mobile apps again and re-sync the phone. So far no big changes but the playback from my 128GB iTunes USB stick is a lot faster. Used to be a delay when pressing the Next Song button on the wheel or screen. 5 seconds or so before the song info would appear as well. Now it goes to the next song faster and the song info appears right away.
Still something screwy in NAV - keep getting the arrows spinning in a circle. Will try again later to see if that is resolved.
Just to complete the thread - all is working. You can use Google maps on the screen and audio if it's Android based. Only issue so far is it kind of takes over your phone so starting an app like Escort Live for my Passport means stopping Android Auto, starting the app, then switching to the app using the LH menu button. No biggie. BTW I used a 64GB USB stick formatted for exFAT. Did the upgrade in less than 30 minutes.

To verify, with android device running Android Auto, you were able to display and control GoogleMaps on your touch screen?
That gives me some encouragement to work a little harder at getting it to work.
I have android auto on my g7 and it starts up automatically when paired with the sync 3.2.2 environment. Just have yet to get the map to display. are you using cabled connection or bluetooth?
AA only comes alive when I connect the USB cable. Here is a screen shot with AA taking over the touch screen. The button on the lower RH corner allows you to go back to the Sync 3 screen.
Cool.
Did you need google maps running prior to connecting AA/the phone?
No. I think it does the same search as when Sync looks for mobile apps like Pandora. Just brings it up. I'm not totally sold on AA though. I like having everything up to date but having to jump back to Sync for some stuff is a bit cumbersome. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
