Unhappy Making GALLONS of oil, Help troubleshoot.

So I have a new to me 2008 F350 CC LB DRW FX4 with 140K miles on it. I was towing my 9500# trailer and about 2 miles into my tow I heard a groaning sound from the engine bay. 10 seconds after I heard the groan, the Mechanics Wrench came on and shut down the engine. It wouldn't re-fire. Towed it home, bought the AE software and the only thing besides some 4x4 related codes was high oil level. Drained out about 7 gallons of fuel & oil. THIS SUCKS.

Using the search button, i guess it is a few different things. Stuck injector(s), fuel pump or the rail. Looking for some help on how to trouble shoot which one it is. Can't afford the dealership. Thanks. Diesel newb.

Do you have a DPF? If so, it could be from regens. Will it start after draining the fuel/oil and refilling it?

^^^ What he said. The DPF is pretty much at the heart of 6.4 engines "making" oil.

Yes it goes through regen. It will start after I drained the fuel/oil mix. How do I know it's a filter issue & how do I address it?

Are you in an emissions testing state? If not, do the delete of the dpf. If so....I would say that your plugged and have to drop it and clean it.

New to you means someone before is smiling.

Sounds like your dpf is plugged up and the only way around it is to drop and replace or try to clean.

I check my oil a few times a month because of these 6.X problems......are you saying you gain 7 gallons during the incident...for example...before towing the 9500 load you checked fluids and all was fine and during the haul you gained 7 gallons????

or did you gain 7 gallons since last oil change 10,000 miles ago and haven't checked the level since?

I live in Cali so delete is not an option. Can they be cleaned or just be replaced?

I checked the oil (clean & new) when I bought it. After 800 miles of towing and another 200 to 300 miles of regular driving I emptied out a total of 7 gallons of fuel & oil. So it doubled its volume in let's say 1100 miles.

so are you sure the volume increase if oil+fuel and not oil+coolant.

if you still have the drain off, after it settled, did it separate?

causes for increased oil levels are:

coolant related - egr leak or cavitation in the coolant pump or head gasket leak or oil cooler leak

fuel related - high pressure fuel pump or lines on high pressure manifold leak or injector related leak or raw fuel blow buy during regen

You need a scan tool to monitor real time data while driving the truck. Regeneration is a decision based upon the Diesel Particle Filter Back Pressure sensor as compared to the Back Presure Sensor, and many other factors. On my truck, I noticed that regeneration would occur when DPF BP was > 35% of E BP. There is also a PID that indicate that regeneration has completed.

It's fuel. It did separate and the oil was not milky like when water is introduced. How do I go about troubleshooting the fuel system? Thanks

i have the AI scan tool but do you think it could be the filter after 1100 miles? Thanks

I was unlucky enough to purchase my 6.4 a couple of weeks ago before doing any homework on these trucks. My mistake. I did get a three year warranty that looks to be pretty solid. I hope to never have to find out.
I was able to convince the salesman to do an oasis report yesterday, and this was the last entry. May or may not be your problem. I hope it isn't, as it looks like a whole lot was done to remedy it.
