I've done that in the past, only to be harassed by the locals about not being able to shut them off independently from the OEM lights. PITA locals! I use switches and relays for everything now. I run the extra wire, just so I can "light em' up " when I go by, just a quick blip! But hey, this is NY!
Talk with you guys later....
Both my '99 and my new '03 came from the factory wired that way. What's up with these Rangers that aren't? Different laws in different states or something?
When I put them in on my '98 with the "stock" kit, I was suprised that they didn't come on with the parking lights too. I expected it to be like my Mustang where they come on with the parking lamps if the switch is on and only go off with the highbeams.
What I did was, pulled the headlights switch out, then took the hot wire from the foglights and spliced it into the wire that goes to the parking lights. best way to figured out which wire to splice into, is to take a needle and wrap the foglights wire around it then stick it through each wire till the fogs come on. good luck
A few months back I thought about doing this mod as well, and Bob Ayers was nice enough to give me a hand figuring out how to go about it. I sent him some schematics and he sent them back to me with some comments and tips (thanks Bob!) The image below represents the plan we came up with.
(NOTE: I also thought about wiring the fog lights directly to the parking lights, but was advised by Bob that the fog lights pull a significant larger current than the parking lights do, and that could possibly lead to problems down the road)
I'm curious now...how come Ford wires some trucks up like this from the factory, and others they don't...even though all the trucks in question are sold in the U.S. (and therefore have to meet the same DOT rules)?
