Freeze/Frost/Expansion Plug sizes?

Hey fellas,

Looking for some info on the 400 freeze/frost/expansion plug size.

What's the specs on the OEM size?

If you look on RockAuto or Summit, there's a ton of different sizes and it's hard to tell which is the correct ones.

1979 FORD F-250 6.6L 400cid V8 Expansion Plug / Set | RockAuto

Check out the above link. They list the following sizes....

Open End Dia.: 1.510"
Open End Dia.: 1.513"
Open End Dia.: 1.577"
Open End Dia.: 1.580"

There's 4 different sizes???? Some of them list "deep", "shallow", "oversize by X".... what the heck is the benefit of each and why are there so many options???

This is the kit I'm likely to order, but want to make sure it's the correct one!

MELLING MPE109BR

I'm trying to do a refresh on my motor - see the pics below of the passenger side expansion plugs. You'll see why I'm asking all these questions.

Lovely lovely leaks at the expansion/freeze/frost plug. Passenger side.

Interesting question. My spare 400 block's openings measure 1.560 as best I can measure them with expansion plugs in there. Oddly enough, the plugs are Dorman 555-027's, and their site says they are the wrong plug.

So, I created a page on my web site to answer this question: 351M and 400 - ???Gary's Garagemahal. But, what you can't tell from the illustration is what the generic part number for a soft plug is. Turns out it is 6026, and on the Part Numbers tab you can see that the plug is supposed to be 1.50" in diameter.

Wow, awesome info again. Some of you guys really do love these Ford 400's.

I'm starting to get attached to mine Every time someone tells me to "swap it for a 460", it just makes me want to keep it even more than I already do!
