I installed a Motorcraft FG800A fuel filter 3 days ago. It accelerates better but it still pings with 87 octane.
I'm 99% sure that the anti drainback/check valve in the front tank is failing, I once had the rear tank on and it did fill up the front tank. I know there is an updated pump that fixes this issue but haven't gotten around to dropping the tank(s).
Ok guys, time to bump this, I have an update. I checked the wiring for both fuel pumpsand found the connectors were in need of some TLC. I cleaned them both off best I could and reinstalled the connectors. Best fuel pressure I can achieve is between 35-40 psi while driving on both pumps. I've been running 91 octane as a band-aid but guess what? IT STILL PINGS slightly. I'm stumped ...
Pull your plugs and inspect them for one that is white, with everything else working properly, that's where logic points (an injector not flowing properly). I just went through that on my 97
