Last year I installed a new BWD EGR valve, reused the sensor and checked the vacuum lines to it. I have never had an EGR code come up since I've owned the truck.
I actually found some factory original Ford knock sensors, I ordered one yesterday. Theoretically could I try accelerating with the SPOUT disconnected to see if the timing is being advanced too much?
Need to check it under load. Engines will make gobs of power just before detonating themselves to death, so the "pulls good, fuel press must be good" test is not a good one. Check the fp!
Put a block off plate between the EGR and intake and try that.
Back up the timing some more until the pinging stops. See if the engine power is where it should be with that. With a 302 you could have a worn timing gear, but still have decent vacuum. To check to be sure, take the distributor cap off, then bar the engine back and forth and see how much you have to move the crank before the rotor starts to turn.
Change the O2 sensor since that is one thing that will constantly change the richness of the fuel. Yours could be leaning out too much, especially after running cleaner through the engine. The crud released from that could have coated it.
The fuel pressure should rise under load. 30 PSI under load is way too low. Fuel pressure should never drop below the idle condition fuel PSI. At full load/WOT it should be in the 40-45 PSI range.
