i have 1978 f150 it backfires when i mash the gas or accelerate quikly, and when i start it, it will kindarumble and then die i have to hole the gas to get it to stay running on the first try, i check my wires they are in order and the plugs are all secure and wires as well. and the fuel filter is less than a year old, the exhuast manifold looks fine too, it has an Edlebrock 4BBL 16 series and intake manifold. What do i do
Sounds like the timing is way off, or a combo of timing and your carb needs adjustment. Is your vacuum advance hooked up to ported vacuum and not all the time time vacuum?
My truck had a similar issue about a yr ago. After replacing the worn out fuel pump and having the Holley 4bbl rebuilt slightly my truck runs great. But i do agree with these guys the distributor timing could be the problem if theres lots of back firings.
Yep,timing first then carb. Just did my 302 yesterday ,timing was retarted way to much and i stuck a vac guage on the carb to set idle screws and got it a lot better. I'l find out the next time i take off in it, at least it don't back fire now and will keep running.
