Spontaneous window blowout

I was going to do some yard work this morning, so I grabbed a pair of work gloves I keep beneath the driver's seat. When I shut the driver's door (did not slam it), I heard a strange POP sound, and this is what happened to the passenger-side rear window.

You can see it happened right where it sits because the glass bits are on the driveway right below it.

The truck is not quite 2 years old with 22,300 miles. Is this a warranty item or do I call my insurance, or both?

Is there the same amount of glass on the inside or more on the outside?

The bits on the driveway are pretty consistently small. The bits on the inside are large and small. None are very big though. About the same amount of glass I think.

Here's what it looks like on the inside. You be the judge, but it looks like about the same inside and out.

It almost looks like a distorted US map. There had to be a chip or fracture somewhere in the glass. I'm gonna say that you'll have to use insurance, unless there are several documented cases of this already.

Are you sure no one was shooting at you?

After cleaning up the glass, I would say there was more on the outside, but it's a close call. The pieces on the inside were a bit easier to clean up, because most of them fell on the rubber mat. There were bits everywhere. When I started cleaning out the remnants in the window frame, they all broke to bits. Anything that I couldn't "grab" fell into the door below. The bits fell into almost every nook and cranny you could imagine (and some that you couldn't).

I had a window broken out in a car and 5 years later I was still finding glass. I even took out the seats to clean it originally.
Could be possible something happened and it was shattered and didn't fall apart until you closed the door and the pressure pushed it.

I was cleaning out glass for a couple of hours.

We had not noticed any issue at all with the window. In fact, I had been in & out of the vehicle an hour or two prior, and nothing.

The first dealer I contacted stated this is not a warranty issue. We will see. I also contacted my insurance company, who has been really good for past glass issues.

Some random flaw was probably in the glass, and it heated up in the sun or something. This is super rare, but I wouldn't loose much sleep over it, just let insurance handle it.

Unless of course you aren't sure that the sniper just missed . . . . Any ex-wives in the picture?

I`m not sure if it`s related but i`ve heard about this happening before.

The pics I saw were of the sliding glass window within the glass exploding for no apparent reason.

I wonder if this has something to do with the pressure inside of our trucks when the last door is closed.

The reason that I said our trucks is because I have a 2016.

These trucks are sealed very well so that might be the reason some owners have said that they really have to slam the door to get it to close. In the perfect situation with the door closing and air pressure, something has to give.

Just a thought.

I doubt this will be covered under the warranty. I bought my '15 in the summer and on the first seriously cold morning in November, when I turned the defroster on, I heard a loud pop and a crack appeared in the middle of the windshield starting under the cowl and going up. The dealer wouldn't do anything telling me that his tech found a chip that caused it. When I took it to the glass shop to be replaced they said there was no sign of a chip, and dealers almost never cover broken glass under warranty. Luckily my insurance covered it 100%.

This same thing happened to a sunroof in a Toyota Camry my wife was driving. It shattered while she was driving70 mph on the interstate. We still don't know the cause but I suspect some kind of temperature difference between the outside air and the glass itself. The glass coverage on our auto insurance covered it except for the deductible.

side windows are tempered glass which can be quite tough and if hit the right way quite fragile. Helped pull an unconscious guy out of a car that was a bit on fire. Took about 5 blows with a 20 Lb rock to break a side window. I was told later that first responders either carry a small device or even an old spark plug. A tap with the spark plug small tip or the device and the glass shatters into a million pieces with no effort. Movies with people punching through windows is BS.

I lost a side window driving buy a guy cutting grass. Must have picked up a stone from 20 - 30 ft away and side window gone.
