The other day i noticed somthing kinda scary with my steering. I used to have the wheel perfectly centered with no play. Now it still has no play, but its off about a quarter turn to the left. It doesnt move or anything on its own. And it still tracks straight down the road, but I am afraid of somthing deciding to let go down there soon.
I have a chevy column and toyota box and Its bolted in not welded or anything. Anybody know where to start.
See if you can get the steering wheel to keep turning after you run it up against the right stop. Don't use excessive force, just see if it will slip with some extra turning effort. Then try the same thing against the other stop. Since the stops are on the spindles, this procedure will check everything between the steering wheel and the spindle - that's just about everything in your steering setup.
This is just a quick-and-dirty check - it's not going to reveal every possible problem, but it will alert you to a loose gear, tie rod end, etc. If you do get some slip, you can get a buddy to turn the steering wheel while you watch the steering gear. You should be able to figure out what's slipping.

George, George, George
Your usually so thorough(ly Good)
You forgot the admonishment:
"Do not attempt this while the vehicle is in motion"
by chance have you hit a pot hole or curb? if nothing has slipped per George's post then you might check the alignment. if the toe has changed the steering wheel will change also. but I would look at George's ideas first.
Yep, sounds at first like the steering wheel is whacked a bit... but credence also to JetJock's thought about alignment. Sounds fixable w/o too much problem.
And hey, a REALLY good buddy would check the steering box while you drive!!! LOL.... "not"!!!
