I was wondering what type of computer that a motor out of a '96 van would be equiped with. Is it that OBD-II that I have heard about? And what type of problems would I have swapping the whole thing into a originaly cfi-equipped vehicle with aod? I know I wont be able to use my TV rod so I am hopping an aftermarket shift kit will eliminate the need for a TV rod? And I see that jegs sells a MIL eliminator designed to block the error codes that force OBD-II computers into 'limp' mode (aftermarket exhaust that dont have cats messes with the O2 sensors). If the van originally had a computer controlled auto tranny then will the computer freak when it doesnt see a tranny? Does it have a dash conenector plug? And if so then do any wires need to be hooked up in that plug for the computer to work or is it all just for driver info and doesnt need to be connected? (obviously my dash board probably wont interface... but my stock dash should work fine for what I need it to do). Thanks, I appreciate any help... will be doing the swap now in one week
Well, its going into the tbird in my sig. But I wouldnt think that would really matter since I am not really using anything stock that the bird had, from fuel pump to computer its all going to be updated (plus I didnt originally mention it because I wasnt sure if it was proper to talk about cars on these forums).
are you wanting to go efi or carb. if you want efi I would talk to some mustang guys at Stangnet.com or corral.net there you could get your hands on the wiring harness and computer from a mustang using mass air. that would be how I would do it. or go to the junkyard and find a mustang with efi and take all its stuff. you really dont want to use the van stuff.
Thanks for the response Kemicalburns, although I dont like your answer LOL. I bought the motor that I did for the fact that it came with all the efi stuff. One less thing I hafta hunt down at junkyards. I am trying to do the whole swap for cheap (1500 budget for everything) and the motor has computer, harness, everything. I have talked to (and am member of) ford-fox.org forums and also yahoo group fox sleepers but I posted my ford questions here because so far I always get overwelming response here and really nothing at the other places. But I might try the ones you mentioned.
So why then would you rather not use the truck efi stuff? I know that its not 'fast oriented' but hey, its efi as compared to cfi or carb (good for street) its rated over 200 hp (my last engine was 120hp) and over 300 lb-ft of torque. And as long as I can get it to run thats fine for now. In a couple years I want to build the motor up - probably around 400-500 hp (and I'll change the entire efi system over to say, trick flow, so I dont want to change it now then again in a couple years), but for know if I can move it around in my driveway then mission accomplished lol.
Anyhow... back to my original questions. I cant beleive no one hear knows what type of computer a 96 van 351w has??? And if that computer has some type of tranny connection that I might have to mess with to get it to work right. The newer trannys are computer controlled arent they?
yes the new trannys are computer controlled, you would need a completely different computer to get it to work. some have said that it wont matter and the computer will only throw some codes saying it cant find the tranny but i havent tried it personally. the reason i said get mustang stuff is because that would be all you need period because its mass air and doesnt have all the obd-II restrictions . you could get that stuff for less then 300 used . I just hate doing things twice
Ok, maybe then if I have alot of trouble getting the stock computer to work then I will try and find a mustang computer and efi stuff. But that might cost me an aftermarket exhaust system (have to stick with stock manifold and just plumb in my own tubing and used mufflers to save the money for the efi).
Is the windsor not mass-air?
And just curious, what are all the "obd-II restrictions" your talking about?
Some of my friends have told me conflicting ideas about the computer controll in the tranny. You say it will take a entirely different computer wich I have heard, but also been told to me is that the computer that controls the tranny is seperate from the main computer. Any ideas? Also, you can get manual trannies behind the windsor so whats the deference with that computer? Does the standard and auto equiped trucks use different computers then?
Thanks for all the help so far! I know I am trying to find out alot of info in a short period of time.
Its been good chatting with you today Kemicalburns, but I got to go home now. I checked out that link and its got some good basic info but all they mentioned is EEC-IV and V didnt happend to see any OBD-II info.
I am quickly learning this is gonna be a pain... and I might not even get the thing to work at all. I tried to find out befor I bought the motor but didnt come up with any definate answers, so now I am just gonna hafta try it and see.
