Fuel Additives

Hi guys,

I tried searching for a thread but nothing pulled up, I apologize if duplicate. Just wandering what everyone is using, if anything, for diesel fuel additive. Appreciate the response.

Stanadyne, hands down.

They are a U.S. company who also make diesel injection pumps and components, so they know what is appropriate for additives. Volkswagen endorses and recommends Stanadyne in their diesel engines. That says a lot.

I'll second the Opti-lube.

No additives here. Lot's of so called pluses (on my big trucker sites) but seems like just that many minus's abide to them.

Oct/Nov: If it turns cold quickly before the winter blend hits the pumps, I'll add clear Kerosene to my tank, maybe 20-30% Kero ratio. I know pure cold winter blend around here is 50-50.

Back in my early diesel days I used Agway "Green Diesel" fuel. It had a supposedly green injector cleaner additive. I think it was more a gimmick than anything else.

You guys are awful.

When you have no ground to stand on, bring in an unrelated topic. Unbelievable.

That's like saying the Ford PM22 was the cause of the 6.0 powerstroke injection failures, what I heard anyway. Opti-lube I heard they put sand in it to help clean.

A bit dated but this was the most scientific study I've seen comparing the various additives. An interesting read. Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums

Personally, I use Motorcraft PM-22 and here's why. If I have a fuel system failure and take my truck to Ford. They examine my truck and find that I've used brand X additive and not what they recommend in the manual they gave me. I can see Ford using this as an excuse to deny covering a $8,000-$12,000 repair. I know that they may loose if I take them to court, but why cause myself all this drama?
There are a lot of great additives out there. In my mind, none of them are worth the problems they can possibly cause me.
The PM22 isn't expensive, however, I buy it by the gallon at the dealership and refill the little bottles. This makes it cheaper and I always have some on hand.
I use Motorcraft PM 22a cetane booster in the summer.
Motorcraft PM 23a anti gel in the winter.

I use Ford PM22. Not religiously, just occasionally. Supposedly helps add a small amount of lubrication back into the ULSD. Its also 100% Ford approved.

When its extremely cold (more than -10F)...then I use the Ford anti-gel and improver. Also approved.

I too am afraid of Power Service after personal experience of injector failure within the first 2 tank fills with Power Service, not a bashing statement, just my experiance. I will be using the endorsed/approved product in the new truck. At least through till the end of the warranty period, as Ram didn't cover the injector failure after asking if I used a fuel additive, and I told them it was Power Service.
