I too am looking for a camera to put on my fifth wheel tailgate. I contacted Rostra who makes one very similar to the one you posted (Rostra P/N 250-8633-LPB) but they cant guarantee it with work with the 360 degree Birdseye view. I am temped to buy the exact camera used on the tailgate and locate the new one on the fifth wheel. Anyone know the part number of the stock camera? However the stock camera still might cause the computer to become confused when trying to knit the image with the two side view camera images.
It looks like the 360 Rear Camera is a FPD Link III type camera. This uses a TI chip to combine video, I2C, and power on one Coax connector. Nothin is compatible with it. From what I read, the current standard is 1 megapixel, but 2 megapixel is in the wings. I would try getting the original camera from Ford. I'm thinking of removing mine from my original tailgate.
I removed the original tailgate camera and stuck it on the 5th wheel tailgate and here is the results: The 360 view is not perfect but it works better than a blank screen.
Thanks IKbrow1
That was a worth while experiment. I wonder how much less distorted the Birdseye view would be If the camera was located as high as possible on the Stomberg Tailgate.
I ran out of time last night, this weekend I will work on it some more and make a permanent installation. But I did prove you can remove the camera from your regular tailgate and re use it. If someone else is interested I can detail the removal process.
So I put it in the Stromberg Carlson tailgate for real. I opened the access plate shown in the photo. Then used a dremel tool to cut an access hole behind the top section of the tailgate. I used spray in foam in the cavity to secure the camera in the 9/16 hole drilled in the front. I then drilled a 1/2 hole in the bottom of the tailgate and fished the wire through. On the display I can see the tailgate in corners of the display so I have an excellent coverage of what is in back of the truck.
Has anyone found an online source for this camera? My searches are coming up empty for this number. I find numbers close to it but not an exact match. I'm guessing it will be very expensive.
Gary
Looks pretty good Ikbrow. With the camera up a little higher then when you taped it on, is the Birdseye view a little less distorted in the back?
I too didn't find the camera when searching for the ford part number HC3T-19G490-DF on Ford parts sites. I have the same tailgate but plan on using the stock tailgate when I'm not towing so I will need a new camera and cable. Did you see a part number on the cable?
There are two segments of camera cable inside the wire harness in the stock tailgate, you'll need both because of the polarity of the connectors. So I think you'll have to order the harness HC3T-14B562-CE. This is on a tag on the end of the cable sticking out of the stock tailgate.
