I removed the original tailgate camera and stuck it on the 5th wheel tailgate and here is the results: The 360 view is not perfect but it works better than a blank screen.
Did you happen to take a picture of the connector on the camera before it was installed? I can't believe this camera is $122 (FORDPARTS.COM), and the F-150 camera (which was actually had good resolution) is $458. There has to be another Ford camera, using the same connector, that actually has a clear picture. I'm impressed to know patented a camera with such crappy resolution.
The other thing I found by searching eBay, where someone showed the Pt# on the camera, and the box, the numbers were not the same. This camera is NOT for an F-250, but as an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FORD-OEM-11-...lYqLvb&vxp=mtr
This is the camera for the 360 system, it may be completely different than trucks that don't have the 360 view. The 4 cameras (front, driver mirror, passenger mirror, tailgate) go into an image processor module that shrinks and stretches the 4 images to make a flat image from above perspective. These 4 cameras seem to use a format called FPD Link III that combines power and a digital video signal on a SMB coax connector. This is not compatible with any other camera that I have found. You can google this and find TI makes both a camera and image processor circuit to do the above.
I ran out of time last night, this weekend I will work on it some more and make a permanent installation. But I did prove you can remove the camera from your regular tailgate and re use it. If someone else is interested I can detail the removal process.
ik I'm attempting created 5th wheel tailgate with ford supplied equipment. Do not plan disturb original equipment. any suggestions or advanced info would be appreciated.
Aiming the camera is the one thing that I did not get quit perfect. So be sure to test the 360 view so it doesn't seem like the rear is tilted up or down.
I bought this one ($$$) from CameraSource, but to put on the back of my truck camper, when the tailgate is "OFF" - tried it, figured out HOW, but haven't mounted it yet! Pretty slick - going to mount it under my rear fold up landing on my Arctic Fox so when we're camped, you can't even see it. Cable is a bit long for what you guys want to do! When we leave and fold it up, it's facing rearward! Ann, it's the Ford Camera in their box and cable, plugs into the empty tailgate socket and works seamlessly with my Sync 5 Camera System - tried it! (had it upside down the first try)
So I put it in the Stromberg Carlson tailgate for real. I opened the access plate shown in the photo. Then used a dremel tool to cut an access hole behind the top section of the tailgate. I used spray in foam in the cavity to secure the camera in the 9/16 hole drilled in the front. I then drilled a 1/2 hole in the bottom of the tailgate and fished the wire through. On the display I can see the tailgate in corners of the display so I have an excellent coverage of what is in back of the truck.
When I was a kid in the '70's our local phone company used Stromberg Carlson telephones!
Custom flow sells a tailgate for fifth wheels that has a camera mount as a option. I have the tailgate but not the camera. Best quality fifth wheel tailgate I have ever owned. Galvanized and then powdercoated. Pricey but quality.
