I am looking into getting a 1996 Explorer. An aquantence of mine is getting rid of his. He is the only owner. He has had all belts, hoses, shocks, tires and brakes done in the past few months so no worries there. My concern is the engine. It has the V8 with 140k miles. I actully desired the V8 until reading some of the posts on this board. It has a lot more power from what I have read.
Can you guys help ease my mind? Should I opt for the more prevalent V6 or go for the V8? And should I be worried about the miles? The difference in the MPG on the two motors is negligable so that's not a worry. My worry is more so longevity without dumping a TON of money into it.
With that kind of milage, I'd go for the V8. Remember it is a truck and somewhat heavy. The V6 has had to work alot harder over its life than a V8. The V8 is a 302 and has been around a long time as a true performer and workhorse. Towing capacity is great. Gas milage sucks but the V6 is not much better. I also have a 1996 V8 AWD and it virtually stays below 2000 rpm the whole time I drive. It moves with very little effort. Lastly, resale. The V8 will always be better for resale.
Matt, your thinking is the same as mine. The 302 is an old design that has proven itself for many years. I talked with the owner and he said he has all the service records and the shop that has done all of the work since day 1 is very reputable.
I have seen some threads on this board stating the the V8 didn't come in 2WD, but this one is. 2WD is my preference since the boat that I pull tops out at 3000 lbs and I don't do any major off-roading. Plus, the MPG is probably 1 or 2 clicks better.
He said he hasn't had any A/C problems. He replaced the compressor, but he said he's never had any issues with the controls inside the cab. My luck, the blend door will bust the day after I get it. FREE FIX HERE I COME!
i kick *** with my V6 on any V8 trucks i have little minor changes the exhoust and intake air + V6 better gas milege and if u looking into supercharger V6 has better ones then for V8 is all up to u
