Just looking for some more reports on how the 3.7L v6 does while towing a load.
the local ford dealer has a good deal on a nice XL 4x4 with the v6 and tow package ($26k for a brand new 2011) but I'm worried how the little motor might do with a load on.
My pop up weighs 1500ish lbs, and my V8 exploder gets 18mpg at 65mph towing it. no prob ... not too worried about this one
but my boat weighs 3300 lbs and my exploder only gets 8.5mpg at 65mph towing.... not sure why but the boat pulls like an anchor, so I'm concerned how it would pull up the hills.
I doubt they would let me hook my boat up to thier brand new pickup and go for a 60mile drive, so I'm just wondering what others may be getting with their 3.7's.
I do not have one of them yet, but I have read enough threads on here and other Ford forums to tell you that I am planning to tow a 4200 pound boat 60 miles to the lake in a 2wd 3.7L with 3.73LS axle ratio and have no doubts that it is going to handle the hills just fine when I get it. Good luck to you.
Its a far improvement over the old 4.2 but you won't win any races with it while towing but it will get the job done! Now 26k for a xl 4x4 I assume reg cab is about 4500.00 more than they are going for here so you may have room to work the deal!! I see 2011 XLT 3.5 4x4 Screw trucks here going for as low as 29,995 most dealers are going 10k off sticker now if not less.

sorry, i probably should have been more clear. the regular cab 4x2 is $24k. this one is a sterling grey Scab 4x4, 3.73LS tow package, PW, PM, PL, Cruise ... all the things I like, and none of the stuff I dont
I usually end up buying wheels and tires for my vehicles anyway, so the steelies would work good to put a set of AT or MT tires on for winter.
a quick search of used vehicles around here shows that $26K around here buys you a 2007 or 2008 outside of this one.
If this one makes it to the year end clearance .... I'm not sure I will be able to leave it there. My only concern is that it will be used as a truck. I've managed to wear out the rear springs in my exploder hauling grain and towing trailers, so a pickup makes some sense. That darn boat just makes me wonder, makes the vehicle work a bit apparently.
