egr uppipe replace

im putting a solid pipe on to stop the ezh gas entering the egr cooler, can the cooler allow any air at all thru it if egr unplugged,i have the 7.3 fan clutch so no worries about fan operation? i can drive a plug into it if need to but before new uppipe goes on be best time and thats where im at now.

If I'm reading this correctly, you still need to weld a plug into EGR cooler.

Why,does the cooler always let air go thru it even if egr valves closed?

If you are putting in a solid up-pipe you need to delete the egr cooler. If it isn't being supported by attachment to the pipe it will crack apart down the road, maybe also damage the intake manifold. Even if it doesn't damage the intake manifold if it comes apart it has coolant flowing through it so that would go everywhere.

tfunk88 has it. Why not just weld up the EGR cooler and leave it in place. Or do a complete EGR cooler bypass? You have got to handle the coolant flow one way or another.

If you put the solid pipe on you still need to cap the egr cooler where the exhaust used to flow into the egr cooler. Otherwise unfiltered air will be sucked into the engine. Look on Ebay there are dozens of company's selling the small cover and screws to cap airflow through most include the new up pipe. But most are under $25.00. If you do it yourself prepare for a really sucky job. The four bolts are a total pain to get to unless you remove the turbo.

As Tideman says a total delete is better but that involves removing the intake manifold which is a ton more work. I deleted mine by welding a steel plug inside the up pipe. I wish I had used the solid pipe. The advantage of the welded plug is nobody can tell it has been deleted.

Now we getting somewhere, the unfilterd air getting into the intake, if the egr valve is closed[not open allowing entrance]how can air get past it into the intake? I know about the water getting in and cracked parts, what i dont see air getting past a closed egr valve?

What's the purpose of doing it this way? Just get a full delete and be done with it the correct way.

The up pipe allows exhaust gas to flow into the egr cooler when egr valve opens. If you block it off you don't have to disconnect the egr valve. Many on this site believe it is best to leave egr connected. In some cases I guess it sets off a code and your fan doesn't work properly. Mine is still plugged in but no exhaust can enter do to block off. A full delete is best but a lot of work and in states with a visual inspection you can sure see egr cooler is gone.

Randy, are you saying no air can pass the egr valve unless its open or no air can be sucked in thru the egr cooler exhaust inlet side i guess would be better asking, if this is the case for just the time being i can install the solid uppipe and not need to do anything to the cooler as far as blocking the inlet? I know the water will keep flowing thru but no exhaust to cause problems, i would not think water alone can rupture the cooler and let into the intake , a full delete will be done asap but for now this will do.

Do it! I like people looking at things differently. BUT, post results back good or bad. I might learn something.

Coolant flowing through will not rupture your egr cooler, but like I stated earlier if it is not supported by the up-pipe vibration will break it before too long. Don't leave it like that for long.

I can spray a little expanding foam towards the rear right under the cooler,as it hardens it will expand around it somewhat and help that single bolt at rear and two bolts up front support it, when i do the full delete ill make it purdy again. As long as leaving the cooler inlet alone[no plugs]and it dont suck any air into the intake unless the egr valve is open im inventing a rounder wheel lol.
