After I ordered the tailgate dampening kit yesterday I was out looking at where it was going to install. I noticed with the tailgate down there were two grommets or rubber bushing at the upper edge on both sides. The one on the passenger side looked like it was about to fall off. On closer inspection both were very loose and it felt like there were being held on with a plastic push pin fastener. I pushed them back in but they both feel extremely loose. Has anyone else noticed this?
Yes! Had the same problem with mine. I ended up buying a couple different types of Push Fastener Rivets from ACE hardware and found a pair that fit perfect. They feel a lot more secure now compared to before.
I took a pic of the ones i replaced the OEM ones with.
You can see that they are a little bit thicker and provide a more tight fit.
Found this thread in the way back when department, and coincidentally, while installing my own tailgate damper, noticed these had come loose again. Time for some new fasteners... The first time they came off I found one in the bed, and the other one hanging loosely, interfering with the closing of the tailgate. fwiw, the OEM tailgate damper is a sweet piece of kit. Went in easily, and no more slamming tailgate!!
Has anyone found a more permanent solution? Looks like I've got this issue as well. I had a Line-X bedliner sprayed in last Friday. Saturday I noticed the left bushing was laying in the bed, yesterday the right one.

The extra material from the LineX application causes the tailgate to drag and rub on these bushings. I ground mine down about 1/16” on both sides and now it’s just snug without so much friction. Watch the outside edge of the tailgate as you open it and you’ll see what I mean.
